Island Institute Publishes Fishers Island Report
Giving Voice: The Fishers Island Project
This report was written by Meredith Doyen (Harr) and Nate Gray, Fishers Island fellows.
For several years the Island Institute has placed "fellows" on Maine islands and in remote coastal communities along the Maine coast. In a sense the Fishers Island, NY, project described in this booklet, published by the Island Institute in printed and on-line versions, was a departure from this pattern — Fishers is not a Maine island, and its community is less geographically isolated than many where the Institute has placed fellows in the past. Nevertheless, when Fishers residents visited the Institute in 2002 and described their circumstances, it became clear that there were parallels between this community in Long Island Sound and many islands in Maine, and that the Institute's experience might be valuable to Fishers. This report, written by the two island fellows who worked on Fishers, documents their efforts, together with many community members, to develop a local governing structure for Fishers. As other island communities in Maine and elsewhere struggle with similar issues, it is hoped that the experience described in this report will be of value.
The report is available from the Island Institute website here.
