Dredge Spoil Dumping -- Rules Changes?
From the New London Day yesterday:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency are soliciting input at six meetings this week on possible changes to rules regarding the dumping of dredge spoils in Long Island Sound.
The meetings will take place at three sites on Long Island and three in Connecticut, including one from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Holiday Inn in New London.
Tim Dugan, spokesman for the Army Corps' New England office, said the meetings are an initial step in developing a new, long-term plan to handle the marine soils excavated from river bottoms, coves, harbors, marinas and channels to keep them open for shipping and navigation. There are four sites in Long Island Sound where dredge material can be dumped: one each in the western and central Sound; one known as Cornfield Shoals about 3.8 miles south of Cornfield Point in Old Saybrook; and one about 3.4 miles south of New London Harbor, just west of Fishers Island.

It's difficult to divine what rule changes are in the offing. Read the original article and an EPA notice for more...
